a simple conversation between two friends.
One friend asked, "What do you miss most from your country (Japan)?" The other replied, "Obon Festival!"
Another friend joined. Three of us talked about our dream of having an authentic Japanese festival in Mendocino, and we looked at each other and said, "Let's make this happen!"
We worked extremely hard to make our dream come true, but at the same time, we had a blast organizing this community event. Along the way, we met so many generous people who encouraged and supported us.
On August 12, 2023, we held the inaugural Mendocino Obon Festival, celebrating under a splendid summer sky! Since then, our annual festival has been striving. However, we always remember the spirit of "a community-based event," where local members contribute their efforts, not a "High-Profile production event." The event performers, instructors, and vendors are local artists and business owners. We would like to bring people together in this community and share wonderful Japanese cultural experiences with all, including visitors and locals.
Our primary support comes from the Mendocino Sister Cities Association (MSCA), a long-standing non-profit community organization. For over thirty years, MSCA is an unmistakable bridge between Omachi-Miasa, Japan and Mendocino, through Student Exchange Program and Artist Exchange Program, transforming the lives of students, artists, and community members.
This festival is made possible by donations, and the net proceeds will go back to MSCA, our leading sponsor.
Additionally, we are profoundly grateful for the significant support from our Volunteers. THANK YOU! You are the backbone of this festival!
A true Japanese summer festival awaits you in a charming village by the Pacific, smiling at Japan.
Come join us
at 2025 Mendocino Obon Festival!
